Does a good song need any promotion to gain recognition?

I was discussing with my friends about music promotion, and some were saying that a good and standard song doesn't need any promotion whatsoever. If it was that good, it will promote itself.
Is that correct?

There are many great songs out there that have no breakthrough because the right audience have not listened to them. So yes every song needs to be marketed appropriately.

Exactly. This is the reason some raw talented musicians haven't breakthrough yet. If every song were channeled to the right audience with an appropriate marketing, it will sell very fast.
